Comparison 📊

Compare your money habits across time – spot the patterns

Comparison helps you understand your finances by looking at them side-by-side with different time periods.

Questions comparison can answer:

  • Am I spending more this month than last month?

  • How does my spending compare to my budget?

  • Am I spending more on food than I was this time last year?

  • How does my grocery spending compare to other people?

  • What percentage of my income goes to food?

You get the idea. Comparison gives you context, so you can actually tell if you're doing better or worse.

We're going big on this: Comparison is a long-term focus for Munyun. Eventually you'll be able to compare anything – across time, against peers, between categories, whatever. This section will keep getting updated as we add more features.

Timeline comparison (available now)

You can turn any timeline chart into a comparison view. Super easy.

Here's what you'll see:

1. Comparison toggle

This appears when your block meets these conditions:

  • Chart type: Bar chart or line chart

  • Breakdown: None

  • Time series: Something selected (not "None")

Your comparison options:

  • Previous Year – Compare to the same time period last year

  • Previous Period – Compare to the period right before (like comparing this month to last month, or this week to last week)

2. Color coding

When comparison is on:

  • Current period – Uses the first color from your palette (full opacity)

  • Comparison period – Same color but lighter (25% opacity)

Easy to see which is which at a glance.

3. Time labels

The labels update to show both periods. Like: "Current Year <> Previous Year (2024-01-01 - 2024-05-20)"

So you know exactly what you're comparing.

How to create a timeline comparison

Let's say you want to compare this year's income to last year's income, month by month.

Steps:

  1. Go to your page

  2. Type / to open the block menu

  3. Pick "Time Series Bar Chart"

  4. In the edit panel on the right:

    • Click "+ Add Metric"

    • Select "Total Income" from the dropdown

  5. Go to "Data Settings":

    • Time Series: Pick "Month"

    • Comparison: Pick "Previous Year"

Done. You'll see this year's income compared to last year's, month by month.

Optional styling:

  • Block Size: Set to "Large" for full-width view

  • Color Palette: Pick whatever colors you like

Now you can instantly see if your income is up or down compared to last year.

Try it out:

Comparison is powerful and honestly pretty fun to play with. See your spending patterns in a totally new way.
