Setting Up Categories 🏷️
Time to label your spending (this is super important!).
Categories are literally how you figure out where your money disappears to. Instead of just seeing "spent $500 this month," you'll see "oh, I spent $200 on food and $150 going out."
Start with the defaults (then make them yours)
When you sign up, we give you some basic categories to start with. But you should totally customize them:
Go to your
CategoriespageClick on any category name to rename it
Click the emoji to change it (make it fun!)
Hit
+ Categoryto add new onesDrag categories around to reorder them
Make categories that actually match YOUR life. Not everyone needs a "golf" category, ya know?
Steal someone else's setup
Don't want to start from scratch? You can import category setups from other Munyun users.
Go to
CategoriesClick the

Done
Don't worry: Importing won't delete your old setup. We save it as a backup automatically.
We also have some pre-made category templates you can try. Just see what vibes with you.
Snapshots = your safety net
Munyun automatically saves your category setup whenever you import a new one. Think of it like a save point in a video game.
Want to save your current setup? Click Take Snapshot anytime. You can restore old versions whenever you want, and you can rename them so you remember what's what.
The three types of categories:
Expense – Money going out (food, rent, shopping, etc.)
Income – Money coming in (paycheck, side hustle, birthday money)
Transfer – Moving money between your own accounts (like paying off your credit card from your checking account)
Pro tip: When you pay your credit card bill from your bank account, that's a transfer, not an expense. You already counted the expense when you actually bought the thing.
